Is your massage therapy establishment, spa or medical practice prepared for the next airborne pandemic?

Is your massage therapy establishment, spa or medical practice prepared for the next airborne pandemic?

We know now that COVID-19 was airborne, spread through droplets, aerosol and through contaminated surfaces.  So, the best course of action to protect yourself from this airborne contagion was to avoid others who could be infected.  We called this social distancing, where the virtual workplace became prevalent, and physical hands-on practices like hands-on medical treatment, massage therapy and spa services were not included.  These hands-on client practices were practically abandoned if you wanted to truly keep yourself safe.

There were many things that could be done to create a safe work environment, through improving your air quality at work, where outdoor workspace might be considered the best option of all.  The best, safest and most reasonably available overall air quality during an airborne pandemic (that we know of to date in this highly evolving time), can be achieved by practicing your hands-on services, where there is an unlimited amount of air ventilation.  Outdoor practice allows infected individuals to exhale their contaminants into unlimited amounts of air, which will disperse the contagions and lessen the viral load exposure to others in the area.

A cabana, rooftop, balcony or working underneath an outdoor trellis could be a better option than most indoor treatment rooms during an airborne viral pandemic. To achieve outdoor workspace for spa, massage and medical practice, you should ensure that your treatment space has privacy and is protected from direct sunlight to avoid sunburn. Use outdoor fans to cool yourself and your client if needed. When setting up fans, you would want to make sure that the air or wind is not blowing directly onto you.

The next picture is an example of an existing trellis at the Michelin Star Relais Christine Hotel in Paris, France.  It is unfortunately at the entrance of the hotel in public view of all the hotel guests; however, this is an excellent example of creating outdoor treatment space to use during an airborne contagion concern.  Growing additional plant material including vines could help reduce the visible exposure of the spa or massage therapy treatment that could be provided inside of it.

The trellis in the back of the picture shown below would be a more ideal position for a spa station, medical treatment or massage table to protect yourself and your client from the sun and other natural disruptions such as birds doing their business, etc.  Planting natural climbing vines and plants along the trellis will take time to grow, so it would be best to start preparing any available workspace you have for this outdoor practice option.

Massage therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other rehabilitative professions should start preparing plans now. Think about how would you work in another airborne pandemic?

In this video below, we’ll show a trellis that's already setup in England that could support outdoor massage, spa and medical practice where it would likely be safer from airborne contaminants than attempting to practice inside where air quality would likely be poorer. If you have available or similar space to this, it's time to plan on how you would or could use it to create safer practices for all.

Creating a Spill Kit and Responding to Body Fluid Spills (BFSs) on Porous and Nonporous Surfaces for Massage Therapists, Spa & Salon Establishments

Creating a Spill Kit and Responding to Body Fluid Spills (BFSs) on Porous and Nonporous Surfaces for Massage Therapists, Spa & Salon Establishments

A spill kit is used to clean and decontaminate areas where blood spills have occurred. Having a spill kit prepared makes it less stressful to clean up a spill.

Spill kits can be purchased or you can make one yourself. These are standard items included in a spill kit:

  1. Personal protective clothing that is disposable, including gloves, goggles, and an N95 mask. A paper gown should be included to protect your clothing from cross-contamination when there is a large spill.
  2. Paper towels and an absorbent material.
  3. Commercially available absorbent material for spill kits can be purchased. Cat litter or vermiculite can also be used. They are relatively inexpensive and work well, although they are messy.
  4. Tongs and a dustpan
  5. An EPA-registered disinfectant
  6. Plastic bags (red will help identify the contaminated contents)

Responding to Body Fluid Spills (BFSs) on Porous and Nonporous Surface

This is the OSHA standard for anywhere establishment workers or customers may be exposed to hazardous agents:

  1. Secure area and notify coworkers and other required responders.
  2. Prepare to clean up:
  • Bring prepared spill kit to spill site if there is a BFS.
  • Select a disinfectant that is registered by the U.S. EPA to disinfect blood spills. Look for this information on the label. Select a cleaner for carpets and a disinfectant for hard surfaces.
  • Put on personal protective equipment (PPE) (gloves, eye protection, and mask).
  1. Remove contaminated objects, spill, and spill waste
  • Cover all spills with absorbent powder and/or disposable paper or cloth towels, use the kit dustpan to remove these materials.
  • Soak up any liquid absorbed into porous surfaces (like carpeting) with disposable rags. Then wash surface thoroughly and rinse.
  • Use nonporous equipment such as a dustpan or tongs (not hands or vacuum) to pick up contaminated sharp items such as needles and broken glass.
  1. Disinfect hard, non-porous surfaces
  • Apply disinfectant and leave the disinfectant visibly wet on the surface for the required dwell time.
  • For horizontal surfaces, pour disinfectant directly on to spill area.
  • For vertical surfaces, spray the disinfectant onto a cloth and wipe on surface.
  1. Dispose of spill waste
  • Place all materials used in the cleaning process, including PPE, sharp objects, etc., in the bucket with a double-lined plastic bag. Dispose of this waste in the dumpster.
  1. Follow-up
  • Remove your contaminated clothing, double-bag it in 2 milli-meter thick. bags, label, wash separately in a washing machine in hot water, and dry on high setting.
  • Wash your hands and other areas of your body that come into contact with the disinfectant or body fluid spill immediately after spill clean-up for at least 20 seconds with liquid soap under hot running water.
  • If soap and water are unavailable, use waterless hand sanitizer right away, and then wash hands as soon as possible. Keep in mind: hand sanitizer will not work effectively in the presence of blood.
  • If you have had an unprotected exposure, immediately contact your doctor for medical treatment advice.

Allow re-entry to area of spill when:

  • all materials are removed;
  • area is clean, properly disinfected, and dry.

COVID-19 Does Live on Skin, Hair and Surfaces (for Longer Than You Might Think)!

COVID-19 Does Live on Skin, Hair and Surfaces (for Longer Than You Might Think)!

WebMD has shared a new study on January 25, 2022  (https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20220125/omicron-survives-longer-plastic-skin-than-other-covid-variants) that shows the Omicron variant of COVID-19 can live on SKIN for 21 hours and plastic for 193.5 hours.

According to WebMD prior to Omicron (https://www.webmd.com/lung/printables/graphic-coronavirus-live-surfaces), they published in 2020 that COVID-19 can live on surfaces for:

5-Days: Metals (door knobs), Jewelry, Silverware and Dishes

Up to 5-Days:  Newspapers, Drinking Glasses and Windows

4-Days: Wood and Wood Furniture

2-3 Days: Plastics, Sinks, Water Bottles, Elevator Buttons

1-Day: Cardboard

WebMD has also reported that COVID-19 can also cling to HAIR.

Given that COVID-19 and omnicron can live longer on surfaces than originally thought, it is important to practice these sanitary measures and more:

COVID-19 is AEROSOLIZED - Protect Your Air Quality & Yourself!

COVID-19 is AEROSOLIZED.  This means the virus can suspend in the air long after your client leaves the treatment room - for several hours! So, practitioners should wear high quality facial masks such as KN95s, and practitioners should not remove their facial masks in between clients when changing over their treatment rooms because the aerosolized virus could infect you!  An infected individual does not have to be within 6-feet of you to infect you!  You can become infected from their aerosolized virus, especially for massage therapists and spa practitioners who work in small and poorly ventilated massage or spa treatment rooms.

When will CE Institute LLC resume "in-person" training? Will we ever return to "NORMAL"?

When will CE Institute LLC resume "in-person" training? Will we ever return to "NORMAL"?

For the past several years, CE Institute LLC has offered in-person training and trade show education, providing thousands of CE hours to students and trade show participants, until COVID19.

Today, much of our population continues to self-isolate, suffer or lose their lives to this horrible virus. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who suffer. We hope here will be an end to this soon.

At CE Institute LLC, we will not schedule any in-person training for the rest of 2021 due to the close personal contact our bodywork training entails for many hours at a time.  With great effort and expense, we have successfully launched our live interactive webinars which have been a tremendous success.  We hope to see old faces and new in any of these successful and discounted educational offerings.

Unfortunately, we are unable to plan future in-person training until we can better understand how to prevent the acquisition and/or transmission of this lethal contaminant.  And while we've become better as a world in recognizing the symptoms and treating this illness, plus developing a vaccine to help prevent hospitalization, our goal would be to hold an in-person training that provides minimal to zero risk to all participants.

We will continue to monitor the progress of COVID19 prevention and treatment options and plan in-person training according to COVID19 prevention and treatment success. So the answer is yes, one day we will resume in-person training when it is safe to do so.  We do not feel it is worth the risk to anyone's life to hold an in-person training, whether it be the student themself or someone else they could trasmit the virus to.  As such, until minimal to zero risk to in-person class participants can be achieved, we will not schedule or hold any in-person classes.
